Death toll in Morbi suspension bridge disaster
The tragedy of the suspension bridge breaking has occurred. In which about 500 people have drowned. By late evening, 171 people have been confirmed dead, while more than 100 people have been injured. Rescue work is going on in Purjosh after this incident.
A century-old suspension bridge over the Machhu river in Gujarat's Morbi town, about 240 km from Gandhinagar, collapsed on Sunday evening, officials said. The bridge was reopened just four days ago after being closed for nearly seven months for repair work.
Morbi Chief District Medical Officer P.K. Didharejia said that at least 60 of the 79 injured people admitted to the Morbi Civil Hospital are in critical condition.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghvi, in a meeting with the survivors of the suspension bridge blast at Morbi Civil Hospital. Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghvi, who rushed to Morbi, said that around 150 people were on the bridge at the time of the accident.
According to reports, many women and children were on the “hanging bridge” when it collapsed and they drowned in the water below. The incident took place at 6:30 pm, when dozens of people were walking on the bridge, a major tourist attraction in Morbi.

“More than 60 bodies have been recovered (as of 9:45 pm) and rescue operations are still on. Fire brigade, NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) and private divers are trying to rescue people. Efforts are on to break the check dam downstream so that the water level falls in the stretch where the bridge was,” Rajkot MP Mohan Kundaria said.
"There is water hyacinth in the river, which is hampering rescue operations," said Kundaria, a resident of Morbi, a part of Morbi district that falls in his Lok Sabha constituency.
